SDS - Oral and Dental FeaturesFrom the Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Newsletter, Summer 2003 Patients with SDS seem to have an increased propensity for dental and oral problems, according to Dr. Michael Glogauer. Oral features include: disease of the gums, mouth ulcers and many dental caries. The cause(s) remain indeterminate at this point, but the role of an abnormal saliva is questioned (decreased flow, decreased buffer capacity, or decreased amylase secretion). Dr Glogauer favors an extensive survey, to better characterize the problem, and educate dentists and physicians on these potential complications. <<Return to Do Your Research main page
